Three Attorneys Honored by Daily Business Review
Miami, FL – Bilzin Sumberg is proud to announce Managing Partner John C. Sumberg has been selected as one of the Distinguished Leaders in Law as part of the Daily Business Review's (DBR) Professional Excellence Awards. In addition, Albert E. Dotson, Jr., was chosen as one of three finalists for Attorney of the Year, and Javier F. Aviñó was named an On the Rise honoree.
John C. Sumberg, a founding partner of Bilzin Sumberg, is one of the most influential real estate lawyers in South Florida, closing complex transactions worth billions of dollars. In his recent work, John was involved in the $4 billion, 185-acre Solē Mia Miami development in North Miami and the $1 billion purchase, renovation, and refinance of 1 Hotel South Beach.
John has received Chambers USA’s highest ranking in Real Estate since the publication’s inaugural year in Florida and has been recognized by The Best Lawyers in America for over a decade. In 2016, John was named by Bisnow to the "Miami Power 50: The Most Influential Players in Commercial Real Estate."
Strong leaders are hard to come by, the DBR said, and the Distinguished Leaders in Law award is about highlighting South Florida lawyers who demonstrated great performances as well as valuable leadership skills.
Albert E. Dotson, Jr., a Partner and Bilzin Sumberg’s Land Development & Government Relations Practice Group Leader, has been a driving force addressing many of Miami’s greatest infrastructure and transit challenges through public-private partnerships (P3s).
In the past year, Al has been at the forefront of some of South Florida's biggest projects, including the $2.4 billion All Aboard Florida rail system that will connect Miami to Orlando, the $400 million Hard Rock Stadium modernization project, Miami-Dade County's $4 billion Ocean Outfall Legislation contract award to stop all wastewater discharge to the ocean by 2025, and the $300 million-plus Liberty Square Rising public housing P3 project. For the second year in a row, Al helped bring the London-based P3 Bulletin South Conference to Miami.
Al is one of just three finalists for Attorney of the Year, which highlights attorneys whose work in 2016 produced a distinct impact on the law and the legal profession in Florida.
Javier F. Aviñó, a Land Development & Government Relations Partner, is considered "the first stop for developers before they start building." Javier was a crucial part of the Liberty Square Rising and All Aboard Florida projects, as well as securing development rights for property owned by Miami-Dade County around the Coconut Grove Metrorail station and serving as zoning and land use counsel for the multi-phased 300 Biscayne development acquired for $80 million.
The On the Rise award recognizes attorneys under age 40 who have excelled in their practice areas and committed themselves to pro bono, charitable, and professional volunteer work.
Attorney of the Year will be announced and the other awards will be presented at a reception May 24 in Key Biscayne.
Bilzin Sumberg is frequently recognized by a variety of legal publications, including Chambers USA, Benchmark Litigation and The Best Lawyers in America.
