Press Release
October 04, 2018
Miami, FL – Bilzin Sumberg is pleased to announce Mitchell E. Widom was inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers (ACTL) at the organization's Annual Meeting in New Orleans on September 29, 2018.

The esteemed fellowship is comprised of 5,700 preeminent trial lawyers from the United States and Canada and is limited to no more than one percent of the population of lawyers in any individual state or province.

"I am honored to sponsor Mitch as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers," said Marty Steinberg, a top U.S. trial lawyer from Hogan Lovells and Fellow of ACTL. "Mitch exemplifies the fundamental values of the College through his longstanding dedication to the profession and admirable strength of character. And, while trying cases and running a busy litigation department, every year, Mitch organizes and runs the most significant fundraising event for the Crohns and Colitis Foundation. Truly, a worthy Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers."

A Partner in the Firm's Litigation Group, Mitch has a broad commercial trial practice with extensive experience in numerous jury and non-jury cases. Among other civil matters, Mitch handles litigation involving class actions, multi-district litigation, antitrust, construction, intellectual property, partnership disputes, and insurance. He has represented individuals and major corporations in lengthy and prominent jury trials and has been appointed more than 25 times by judges in Miami-Dade County to act as a Special Master for evidentiary hearings and discovery disputes.

Mitch has been involved in some of the largest class action litigation in recent U.S. history including the representation of hundreds of individual and commercial claimants damaged by the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill; the representation of opt-out plaintiffs in the LCD and CRT price fixing antitrust class actions that resulted in the recovery of over $300 million; and the defense of an automotive manufacturer in the Takata air bag dispute, one of the largest multi-district litigation cases in the country. Mitch has also successfully represented officers and directors of a regional bank in a shareholder derivative and class action suit with claims of over $100 million, among an array of other complex class action litigation.

Passionate about giving back to the community, Mitch and his family founded The Keymorada Invitational Fishing Tournament to benefit the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America in 2004. The event, now in its fourteenth year, is the most successful fundraising fishing tournament in the country, having raised over $7.3 million to help find a cure for these diseases.

Mitch is consistently recognized for his professional achievements by prominent legal publications including Chambers USA, Benchmark Litigation and The Best Lawyers in America. In 2018, Mitch was recognized as among the "Top 100 Miami Area Super Lawyers" by Florida Super Lawyers.

The ACTL is dedicated to improving the standards of trial practice, professionalism, ethics, and the administration of justice through education and public statements on important legal issues relating to its mission. Fellowship is extended only by invitation, after careful investigation, to those experienced trial lawyers who have mastered the art of advocacy and whose professional careers have been marked by the highest standards of ethical conduct, professionalism, civility and collegiality. The ACTL includes members from all branches of trial practice and seeks to serve its mission through its 35 General Committees and 62 State and Province Committees.
