Bilzin Sumberg Partners with Year Up South Florida to Mentor Students Starting Their Careers

Press Release
April 26, 2019
Miami, FL -- Bilzin Sumberg is proud to partner with Year Up South Florida, a non-profit workforce development program for motivated and talented young adults, to welcome interns as part of the Firm's commitment to the South Florida community.

Through this new partnership launched in January, Bilzin Sumberg and Year Up will work closely to identify opportunities to provide interns with an enriching work experience that helps them reach their full potential. In addition to full-time, paid internships where participants earn a weekly stipend and college credits, Bilzin Sumberg supported Year Up with an in-kind donation of desktop computers, creating additional opportunities for select students.

"It is a pleasure to partner with Year Up in this initiative," said Albert E. Dotson, Jr., Managing Partner for Bilzin Sumberg. "Our community's continued prosperity is not only reliant on the business and civic leaders of today, but is also hinged upon the ability to cultivate those who will lead in the future. Bilzin Sumberg is committed to direct efforts to help sustain our community as a whole by developing our human capital."

Community giving is nothing new for Bilzin Sumberg. Since its inception, firm leaders have been active participants in the South Florida philanthropic community. In 2007, the firm created Bilzin Sumberg Cares, an outreach program that provides the Bilzin Sumberg team with volunteer opportunities to work together to benefit various charitable organizations. Bilzin Sumberg Cares has partnered with numerous nonprofit organizations including the United Way of Miami-Dade, Special Olympics, Habitat for Humanity, Voices for Children Foundation, and Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America.
For Year Up, partnering with a top local company like Bilzin Sumberg, provides another avenue to offer free job training to talented and motivated youth, ages 18-24, who have yet to complete their college degrees.

"As Year Up South Florida continues to grow and serve more young adults in our community, we are so excited to join forces with one of the most important law firms in the area," said Leopoldo "Polo" Coronado, Year Up South Florida Executive Director. "It's great to have a partner like Bilzin Sumberg that values extraordinary talent and is dedicated to mentoring future leaders. They are helping us provide meaningful, on-the-job experiences to talented youth. We share a commitment to making a difference in Miami by lifting others as we climb."

Since 2012 and in partnership with Miami Dade College, Year Up South Florida has helped more than 630 young adults to start their careers, creating a pipeline of diverse, motivated talent for more than 15 corporate partners in the region. Year Up South Florida currently serves approximately 160 young adults each year, with 97 percent of graduates employed or attending college full-time within four months of completing the one-year program.
