June 24, 2021
Miami, FL – Bilzin Sumberg congratulates Managing Partner, Albert E. Dotson, Jr., on being recognized by South Florida Business Journal ("SFBJ"), as a Diverse Voice, an honor that is part of their Diversity & Inclusion Awards. SFBJ's inaugural class of "Diverse Voices" is a group of outstanding business leaders in the South Florida area who are making a difference in advancing diversity, inclusion, and equality in the business world.
Al's longstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion is exemplified by his leadership in advancing and integrating diversity and inclusion at Bilzin Sumberg. This includes involvement by the firm in a number of initiatives that work towards the same goal of advancing diversity and inclusion in the wider legal profession, such as the National Association for Law Placement's Street Law Legal Diversity Pipeline Program, which introduces students from underrepresented communities to the legal profession by connecting them to practitioners from law firms; Year Up, a non-profit workforce development program for motivated and talented young adults from diverse backgrounds in the South Florida community; and the Law Firm Antiracism Alliance, whose aim it is to inform and implement legislative and regulatory strategies to address anti-Black racism.
As Managing Partner, Al oversees Bilzin Sumberg's Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee which governs the firm’s approach to recruitment, retention and advancement of attorneys in every area of law in which the firm practices. The Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee frequently hosts events to provide educational opportunities and open discussion about diversity and inclusion topics. This year during Black History Month, Bilzin Sumberg, in partnership with other South Florida law firms, hosted a virtual event with Miami-Dade Circuit Judge William Thomas to discuss what law firms should be doing to retain and support Black associates, in addition to a Juneteenth panel that convened local Black leaders to talk about addressing racial bias and promoting equity. Bilzin Sumberg also hosted their “When Women Lead” virtual panel for Women's History Month to discuss the continuing challenges that women face in advancing professionally, and what they see as the way forward for greater gender equity in management roles and organizational leadership.
Al also serves as Chairman Emeritus of 100 Black Men of America, which is recognized as the nation’s top African American-led mentoring organization.
