GET TO KNOW STANLEY

Since his early career as an Assistant County Attorney for Miami-Dade County, Stan has worked at the forefront of Florida land use law and has been called the czar of land use and zoning law. He was the principal draftsman of important land use legislation and is frequently consulted on the subjects of owners' and developers' rights and complex zoning and permitting issues.

In addition to representing clients, Stan works extensively with government and regulatory agencies, developers, and landowners to examine, interpret, and establish land use policy. He has served as special land use counsel to several Florida municipalities and as a special magistrate in land use litigation for the Miami-Dade County and Orange County Circuit Courts.

What kind of relationship do you like to have with your clients?

My clients view me as someone who understands the possibilities and the obstacles; they know I will focus on their goals and how to achieve them.

What work are you doing with Miami-Dade County today?

At the request of former Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez and County Commissioner Sally Heyman, I was named to the Historic Preservation Advisory Work Group. Our group reviews and recommends updates to the Miami-Dade County Historic Preservation Ordinance.

How else are you involved at Bilzin Sumberg?

For many years I served on the Executive Committee from which I stepped down several years ago to allow our next generation the opportunity to impact the firm's strategy and governance. I like to spend time mentoring the more junior people in my department and I regularly lecture on different areas of the law for the associates firm-wide.
