Miami, FL – Bilzin Sumberg is pleased to announce Chairman and founding member of Bilzin Sumberg, John Sumberg, and his wife, Jo Sumberg, have been selected as the 2025 recipients of the United Way Tocqueville Award for Outstanding Philanthropy. The award represents United Way’s highest recognition in acknowledging the extraordinary contributions and impact that select individuals have made to the South Florida community through their philanthropy.

The United Way Tocqueville Award for Outstanding Philanthropy recognizes the spirit of Alexis de Tocqueville who, after visiting America in the early 1800s, wrote extensively about what he called the great American experiment – democracy – and the willingness of Americans – no matter what their station in life – to volunteer, to contribute, to give, to care without asking for anything in return. John and Jo will be honored at United Way Tocqueville Society’s Centennial Grand Reception to be held on March 3, 2025.

John served as Managing Partner of Bilzin Sumberg for more than 20 years, since its inception. Passionate about giving back to the community, John holds leadership positions in several civic and charitable organizations. He is particularly involved with United Way Miami, where he has served as a Board member since 2010 and currently serves on the Executive Committee. John and Jo became members of United Way's Million Dollar Roundtable in 2010.

In addition to his United Way Miami work, John is Vice Chair of the Board of the Lotus House women's shelter, a member of the Board of Trustees of Gulliver Academy, a Board member for the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, and a Board member and former Chair of the University of Miami School of Architecture Master in Real Estate Development + Urbanism Advisory Board.
